Landscapes! For the class of Oct 2

Greetings, all! A fun day in the 'hood today.

Homework: a more refined drawing of your favorite and least favorite yard seen in Tech Terrace, with a short essay about each. Discuss why you like/dislike the yard; refer to the historical and cultural contexts you read about in the essay/article.

Meet for the Oct 2 class at the northeast corner of the Student Union building. We will be discussing "Weeds Are Us" by Pollan (p. 132 in your course packet) and Paradise by Design by Phillips (both chapters; p. 176).

Bones Beetles Birds for the class of Sept 30

If I've OK'd the composition in your notebook, draw it on your tracing paper, then transfer it to the bristol board with just a light outline of pencil. Don't do anything else.

If I haven't yet OK'd your composition, or if you want to switch to a different fruit/veggie, then sketch it out in your notebook, and draw it on the tracing paper--bring it to class next week, alng with your subject and any supporting photos/info you need.

Bring all your art supplies.

I'm just going to snap pics all semester and pick out the best couple of shots that week. Don't worry if yours didn't make the cut today--it could have been the light, or the tree growing out of your head, or whatever...I hope to get one of everyone at some point!

Meet in the classroom; bring your squash/onion/apple/whatever, plus all art supplies.

Homework from the class of Sept 16: one page of boxes; two pages of flowers; pick out the thing you will draw for your botanical, and find/bring any photos you need.

Landscapes! (For September 18)

Hey gang--just a reminder to meet at Tech gardens for this week's class. Bring your art supplies, and some thoughts on why the grass is higher on one side of Memorial Circle/how to go about finding the answers to oddball questions).

I hope the families of our classmates from the Texas coast are fairing well.

Homework: re-read Stilgoe's "Beginnings"

• Prepare for discussion by identifying three ideas in the essay that intrigue you; make notes about why you find them interesting
• Check out two or three things he mentions (e.g. fire hydrants)
• Find and identify two or three curious things (in the manner of Stilgoe) that you notice during the week

For drawing: find another tree and practice

More on the Goodwill Bikes

I spoke t Jessica and she reports that the bike sale opens at 9 AM on the first Tuesday of each month, but it's best to get there by 8:30 if you want a shot at getting a good one, and even then it's not a given that there will be one that suits.

I'm not sure which Goodwill it is, but I'm guessing it is the one at 1109 Broadway.
