BBB 10/28

Meet today in the classroom to finish the bird drawings. These, along with the essay, will be due at the start of class next Tuesday.

For the essay: discuss how your drawing fits into either the artist/naturalist or naturalist artist category, what these terms mean historically, and why your drawing fits in a particular category. Describe/explain any aesthetic decisions you've made regarding composition, style of drawing, etc.

Essay should be 2-3 pages, double spaced, with references.

Read the essays provided, think about what we observed on Wednesday in the Depot District, and keep all of this in mind when we meet at my house again next Wednesday to watch the remainder of "The Last Picture Show."

I’ve decided that I just can’t spend $150 on the Cactus Theater to show a movie. My inner frugal person just won’t let me. So instead, I think we’ll all meet at the usual time in front of the Honors College with our bikes tomorrow, then ride to the Depot District, where Steven and Christine can give their presentations. After that, we can all ride to my house and watch the movie for the remainder of the time for class.

Popcorn will be served.

Well, it looks like we'll have at least a few ducks and geese to draw at Leroy Elmore park, so meet at Tech Terrace (or Leroy Elmore) at 1:30 today or tomorrow. Bring your art kits and binoculars.

Prompt from yesterday:

Do you think you could do an experiment in local eating like Barbara Kingsolver's? Wh or why not? What would it look like if you tried it (that is, what sort of parameters would you have)?

We'll meet next week with our bicycles in front of the Honors College. Barry Lopez will be joinning us for a ride to the Depot District where we will watch a screening of "The Last Picture Show" at the Cactus Theater. Christine and Steven will be presenting. Discussion will follow the screening. There is no reading assignment.

Freshmen: Remember to get something in to me by no later than noon on Monday so I can post your mid semester grades.

Here are three prompts:

1) Define "place."

2) Ian Frazier had an unusual list of things that described the Great Plains; William Least Heat-Moon wanted to make a "deep map" of it. If you were to make a deep map of Lubbock, what would it include?

3) In the readings by Rolvaag and Weaver, immigrants to the Great Plains experienced both prejudice and difficulty assimilating. What role did fear play in both these things? Are there parallels to today?

There is an additional reading for next week ("Leaving Vinland" by Diane Heuter Warner) that is available in the Honors College at the front desk. Meet in front of the HC with your bikes, and we will pick up where we left off this week with David Campos taking us downtown to do a presentation on the Lubbock tornado.

NOTICE: The final version of the botanical drawing is due at the beginning of class next Thursday. It should include the common and latin name of the plant, and one piece of natural history information.

We will meet in class and then go outside.

Greetings, all. I seem to have picked up a stomach bug and don't think it is advisable for me to try to ride my bike downtown. David was scheduled to present on the Lubbock tornado--we'll just move that to next week. I would like to meet briefly with you today outside the HC to discuss where you are on your papers for this class and to give you a prompt if you need one.

This also gives us an additional week for reading related to David's talk, so I will prepare a handout to supplement what was in your reader and try to get that to you by Friday.
