Final project/paper: design your own landscape. Details for this project are rather involved, so if you need to go over them, be sure to come to class tomorrow.

Landscapes cookout update: 4/23
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Since I've already bought the meat for the meat group, it doesn't seem fair to make the rest of the groups worry about getting together to buy the stuff for the meals. So here's the deal: I'll take care of everything and you all just come on Monday night and enjoy the meal.
If you have a particular dish you'd like to bring, we'll welcome it. Just let me know ahead of time that you're bringing something so I'll know how much to prepare.
If any of you'd like to come a little early to help with the grilling, I'd welcome that, too. Otherwise, let's just enjoy eating a good, mostly local meal before finals start.

Current Readings update 4/22
Don't forget: Rick Bass in class on Friday! Barry Lopez at dinner on Friday night! Carlsbad Caverns on Saturday!
Here the skinny for the field trip Saturday: meet in the parking lot north of the Honors college at 7 AM. I'll bring donuts. You bring pillows for sleeping in the van, $6 for the park entry fee, and some extra cash for lunch in case they don't take the purchase card. We should get to Carlsbad around 10 AM New Mexico time, take a tour of the Caverns, eat lunch, and then noodle around a little on the surface world. We'll try to leave Carlsbad no later than 2 o'clock New Mexico time, putting us back in LBB between 6 and 7 o'clock our time.

Update Current Readings: 4/9
Friday tutorial group: I have to pick up two vans for a field trip on Firday at 10 am, so I may be a little late--just hang out and wait for me.
We are workiing on meeting at the Southwest Collection Special Collections Library next Wednesday for class. Stayed tuned for further details.

Fieldcraft update: 4/9 Prairie Chickens
Hi all, we will meet at the OPC tomorrow at 1:30 to leave for Milnesand, NM. Please bring warm clothing for the trip (including long underwear and a warm coat), hat, gloves, headlamp, sunscreen, insulated mug, water bottle, binoculars, journal and art kit, comfortable walking shoes.
If you have work gloves, please bring them.
The weather is going to be cold and windy Friday night and early Saturday morning. Bring warm clothing (including a parka, if you have one).

Landscapes update 4/9 "Snow Day"
Class was cancelled because of weather today, but like any other "snow day," we're going to have to make it up. We will easily do this by having each small group get together with me to plan what you will bring to the "local foods" cookout. There is no homework this weeknd for class, so that should also give you a little extra to to spend on figuring out what schedules will work.
Here are prospective dates for the cookout:
April 21, 22, 26th, or 28th
We'll take a vote on Tuesday to see what date works best for the most people.
As for meeting me as the small groups, I am free on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-5, on Thursdays from 2:30-5, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Let's try to get together sometimes next week, so by next Tuesday each group needs to have some idea of when to meet.

MEET next Tuesday: in front of Gordan. If the weather is bad, we will retire to the classroom.

Fieldcraft Update 4/6
Meet tomorrow at LLL. We will go over the particulars of the fieldtrip to see the Lesser Prairie Chicken this weekend, including how to draw a bird in motion.
Afterward we'll work on wildflower identification on the trail (since it was too cold on the canoe trip for any of them to be out yet). Jordan reports seeing some on his bike rides in to school.
Bring: art kit, bird field guide, wildflower field guide. Jordan will bring the journals.
Jordan and I will be riding our bikes to LLL; we''ll be leaving at 1:45 from the OPC. If anyone wants to join us, email me so we will know to wait for you.
Note for this weekend: We'll cook a dutch oven dinner Friday night, rise early to see the grouse do their courtship thing on the lek, and have breakfast. After breakfast we'll do a service project for the biologist working on the LPC, then we'll have a bite for lunch and head home. You don't need to worry about bringing food, tents, or sleeping bags/pads.
