BBB 9/16

We are meeting again at the Tech Gardens (across from the Rec). We will be working on more sketches in preparation for our first botanical drawings.

Next Tuesday we will meet in the classroom.

Lit of Place 9/16

Greetings everyone. Here is our reading assignment for next week:

"Great Plains" by Ian Frazier
"Atop the Mound" by William Least Heat-Moon

Both of these can be found in the first section of your reader. "Atop the Mound" came from Least Heat-Moon's book, PrairyErth, in which he explores the idea of creating a "deep map" of a place. What do you think he means by this? How do these essays/chapters relate to that idea (use specific examples where possible)?

We will meet at Lubbock Lake Landmark next week (click the link for a map). If you would like to ride a bike over there with me, I will be leaving from the front of the Honors College at 2 PM. It will take us about half an hour to ride, so everyone else can meet in the parking lot atop the hill at the Landmark at 2:30. Please let me know if you are riding so that I will know to wait for you.

Obed Hernandez-Gomez will be doing  the first class presentation.

I'd like to go ahead and start scheduling the class meetings/locations. Here are the dates that we will need to fill in:

We will have to double up on some of these days, so you might get together with a partner and choose a place you can present a story together. Also, if you'd like to present a story at Caprock Canyon on our field trip day (October 16th), we can accomodate that. Please be thinking about these dates and the locations/stories you'd like to choose, and be prepared to tell me on Wednesday of next week.

Landscapes 5/8

Reminder: The Honors College is closed on Saturdays. So If you are turing in your project today, you may leave it in the milk crate outside the front door at my house.

Fieldcraft 5/5

Don't forget: final post is due by May 10, 7:30 AM.

Also, don't forget to turn in your journals and binoculars to me sometime before May 14. Make sure your name is on the bins, and turn them in at the Honors front desk if I am not around.

Landscapes 5/3

Final Project: Design your own landscape. Will it be a coffee house? A cemetery? A park? A school? A neighborhood? A front yard?

You decide.

Provide at least two drawings, with an explanation of the design and why you chose the element you did. Refer to the readings this semester to support your design choices (source all material). The accompanying explanation should be 3-5 pages.

Project is due no later than May 8, 4:30 PM, but you may turn it in sooner than that.

Class on May 4: Read the chapter from Barbara Kingsolver's book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, in your course packet.

Class will meet in my backyard at 5 PM. Enter at the west side gate (driveway side). Bring a lawn chair or other seating.

Meet at Tech Terrace Park tomorrow at 2:20. Read for discussion: "The History of the American Lawn" by Virginia Scott Jenkins and "Why Mow?" by Michael Pollan, both in your course packet. Bring your journals, art kits, and bicycles.

Greetings everyone! I am still working on your midterms and won't have them all graded by tomorrow. So I'll aim for Tuesday--I'll bring them to class when we meet at Memorial Circle, so you don't need to worry about ]icking them or your journals up.

Hi everyone. Remember that we are meeting at the Lubbock Cemetery tomorrow. Here is a map to the cemetery's back entrance, marked with a red "X". Take 19th to MLK blvd. Turn right on MLK. Turn left at the north entrance of the park. Take the loop around the park to the back side of the cemetery, on the south side of the lake.

Do NOT take 34th, as it does not go through. Do NOT try to Mapquest Lubbock Cemetery, because you will end up in the wrong place.

Don't forget to bring your final draft of the midterm, plus your letter and drawing(s) from the NRHC.
