The prompt from this week is "Tracking"--You must "ramble and return," using tracking as a metaphor. Recommendation for material: go outside and spend some time trying to follow your own tracks.

MEC tutorials paper new due date

My apologies! I understand that there is some confusion about the due date for the tutorial papers. I've decided that rather than having them due on Tuesdays, I'd like you to turn them in at the start of each tutorial. I'll explain this further in class tomorrow.

Literature of Place (LoP) 9/4

Reading for next week: "The Problem of Place in America" in your course packet.

Meet at 2:15 at Tech Terrace Park (23rd and Flint), north side, with bicycles.

Journal homework: In the manner of Stilgoe's essay from Outside Lies Magic, "notice" 3 new things per day.

Mother Earth Chronicles (MEC) 9/4

Hi all--I've got the tutorial assignments posted on the right. We'll try the schedule of papers due for a week or two and see how it works.

This week's prompt: Write a detailed description of a memory related to nature. Use a combination of memory and research for detail.

Next week's reading: Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.

Intro fieldcraft 3/21

Hi all--

I've been waiting to see what the weather was going to do before deciding on a meeting place, but it looks like it could go either way. So let's meet at LLL at 2:20. That way, if it is rainy, I'll do a lecture about mapmaking, and if it is reasonably nice, we can go exploring.  Come prepared for indoors or out, so that means, bins, bird book, journal, and wildflower book if you've got it. Also be prepared to walk a muddy trail. Please keep an eye on the temperature and wind chill, too, and dress accordingly. Unless it is blowing 900 mph or raining hard, I'm taking you outside!

The good news about all this wet weather is that it might actually be a decent year for wildflowers! Fingers crossed, anyway.

Fieldcraft 2/15

Hi everyone--

A reminder that we are meeting at the City of Lubbock Cemetery tomorrow. The true name of the cemetery is Eastlawn Memorial park, and a link to the map is here: http://www.yelp.com/map/city-of-lubbock-cemetery-lubbock

We are actually meeting at the mausoleum, which is on the east side of the cemetery. The easiest way to get there is to follow the road around Canyon Lake 6 until you get to a large gate leading to the cemetery. The gate is located on the south side of the eastern-most bend in the road around the lake. On the map, you can see where the road runs adjacent to the north east corner of the cemetery. Find that, and you will find the gate.

It looks like it will be a pretty day tomorrow, with highs in the mid-50s and light winds. Bring your bins--we're going birding!

Fieldcraft 2/8

Greetings, all! We are meeting tomorrow at LLL at 2:20, as planned. It looks like the high will be in the mid-50s with a chance of rain, so bundle up and bring your waterproof jacket/hat. We will be walking around the long trail. Bring your binoculars, bird books, journal and something with which to take notes.

Tomorrow looks like a pretty day, so we'll be drawing outside. Bring your art kits  and something comfortable for sitting on the grass. We'll meet at ED 164 and go from there.

Hey y'all, don't forget that we're meeting at Urbanovsky Park tomorrow. Bring something comfy to sit on. It should be fairly nice weather, but you can get chilled sitting still, so dress more warmly than you might if you were just walking around. Bring your art kits.

LoP 11/30

Finish reading Like Water for Chocolate and the essay on pies by Sue Hubbell. We will discuss these at the pot luck next Tuesday.

The pot luck will be held at my house, starting at 2:30. I'l send you all an email with my address, so look for it.

Everyone needs to bring a place-related dish, and know from where each of the ingredients come. Be prepared to tell us how the dish relates to place. I'll start a list of dishes that people are bringing on this blog so that we won't duplicate dishes.

MEC 11/30

Tutorial will continue this week, and also take place next Monday and Wednesday. Only the Thursday group will be exempt from tutorials.

The prompt that is due this week is the oral interview/story with an elder. Next week we will discuss the drafts handed in this week. The Thursday group will not workshop these drafts, so they only need to bring one draft, for me. I will edit these and return them to the Thursday group.

The final papers that are due next week are the drafts we edit this week, the prompt on a challene you have faced and overcome.
